A public hearing will be held by the Town of New Paltz Town Board on the designation of two Critical Environmental Areas (CEA) within the Town of New Paltz on June 17, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. via videoconference:

The purpose of the designation is to alert landowners, developers, and regulatory agencies to exceptional or unique local environmental features during State Environmental Quality Review. The designation ensures that these features are not overlooked, and that potentially harmful impacts to them are evaluated in determining the significance of a proposed action.

The Shawangunk Ridge proposed CEA comprises approximately 4,000 acres and is bordered by the Towns of Gardiner, Rochester, Marbletown, and Rosendale, State Route 299, and the break in slope (and portions of Canaan Rd and Dug Rd) between the Humpo Kill, Kleine Kill, and Springtown flats and the lower slopes of the ridge. It is significant for ecological, geological, hydrological, historic, and scenic attributes and for recreation and tourism.

The Plutarch Woods and Wetlands proposed CEA comprises approximately 1,500 acres and is bordered by Plutarch Rd, the Town of Esopus, the New York State Thruway, and Elliotts Lane (north of the Elliott Farm). It is significant for ecological attributes.

All interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard in person or by directing comments in writing to the Town Board.
