High Falls Man arrest for Felony Assault

The New Paltz Police Department reports the arrest of;

Nicholas R. Mottsey, age 26
High Falls, New York 12440

Mr. Mottsey was arrested on March 3, 2018 at about 4:27am and charged as follows;

One count Assault in the 2nd Degree, a class D Felony
• One count Identity Theft in the 2nd Degree, a class E Felony
• One count Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree, a class A Misdemeanor


On March 3, 2018 at approximately 4:23am, a New Paltz police officer on patrol in the Village of New Paltz observed a male refusing to leave a local establishment that had closed for the evening. The man was arguing with a staff member who was telling him the bar was closed and he needed to leave. As the officer approached the scene he witnessed the male, Mr. Mottsey, brandish a knife and stab the employee. The officer intervened, ordering Mr. Mottsey to drop the knife and deployed his Taser when Mottsey refused to comply with the officer.

Mr. Mottsey was taken into custody and transported back to the New Paltz Police Department. At the police station, Mr. Mottsey identified himself as Nicholas Hansen providing the officer with a different date of birth and address as well.

Mr. Mottsey was arraigned by New Paltz Town Justice James Bacon and remanded to Ulster County Jail in lieu of $25,000.00 cash bail. $50,000.00 bond. After Mottsey’s booking at the jail officers learned he provided them with a fake name and date of birth.

The victim sustained a non-life threatening injury, was tended to at the scene and transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Mr. Mottsey is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in the Town of New Paltz Court on March 6, 2018 at 7:00pm.

The New Paltz Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New Paltz Rescue Squad.
