Traffic Stop Data
The New Paltz Police Department is the only law enforcement agency in Ulster County tracking and publicly releasing traffic stop data. This is the direct result of the work of the New Paltz Reform and Reinvention Committee.
In August of 2020 the Committee recommended to the Chief that the department begin to collect demographic data from vehicle and traffic stops to better analyze potential bias. In September of 2020, officers began submitting a report for each traffic stop detailing the reason for the stop as well as the race and gender of the vehicle operator. The first twelve months of data were released to the public in September 2021 and the department updates the stop data monthly on our website. The New Paltz Police Department is the only agency in Ulster County publishing traffic stop data as part of its committment to police transparency.
